The Finnish police have reported discovering the anchor behind the severed undersea internet cable that links Finland to Estonia.

Last month, Finland detained the Eagle S, an oil tanker transporting Russian oil, which is suspected of deliberately dragging its anchor along the seabed, causing damage to the Estlink 2 cable and four other submarine communication cables.

"People have found the anchor in a location near where the wreck of the Eagle Sal passed, towards the western end of the salvage route on the seabed," Finland's National Bureau of Investigation said in a statement.

The ship's crew and the owner of the Eagle S are potentially to face a court trial in Finland, asserts Finland's Deputy Prosecutor General, Jukka Rappe, in a briefing to Reuters.

As part of the ongoing investigation, the Scandinavian authorities have enforced a travel restriction on the crew.

According to Finnish customs, the Eagle S is thought to be part of Russia's shadow fleet, which supplies oil secretly to avoid Western sanctions.
